I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and the pacing. It was hard to put down, and I liked Runa and many of the peripheral characters in this story, including Wraith, Kynan and Gem. In some of Ms. Ione's books there are too many 'walk on roles' of characters from other books, the mythology sometimes feels as though it's been thrown into a blender and the magical systems and technology aren't adequately given a foundation, but in this book we only met characters who were necessary for the story, the Harrowgates and how some of the other curses, magic, and demonic-diseases occurred were given a foundation, and when we crossed paths with some other organization within Ms. Ione's 'world' we were given just enough information to understand it and then the story moved on, neither lingering too long, nor throwing it at us without explanation.

I really enjoyed the demon hospital and the realism of the background routine, with injured demons flittering in and out. It reminded me a bit of the 'waiting room' in Beetlejuice, perhaps not quite so comical, but in a good way.

I deducted a star because it took me a while to warm up to Shade, mainly because he had started out not really caring about Runa (who he'd had a relationship with in the past) and that lack-of-interest was credible and kinda jerk-ish, so when all of sudden he was interested in her now that she was a shifter it was kind of annoying. An alternate explanation was given, but the damage to my perception of him was done because his negative attitude was given via his point of view originally. And also, he contemplated... Not going to spoil it. But I identified a lot more with Wraith and Kynan than I did with Shade (not that I was 'shipping' him or anything with Runa) even though he's super-hot and sexy. And of course the sex was great. It always is... :-)

Desire Unchained Demonica Book 2 Larissa Ione 9780446400985 Books Reviews

A couple of reviews ago I mentioned that I needed to start paying more attention when I pick up books. At that time I was referring to the order of books in a series. With the Demonica series it has more to do with series spin-offs. I started the Lords of Deliverance series before I realized that a lot of the back story, world building and characterization began with the Demonica series. See what I mean about paying attention? *sigh* No worries though. My 2013 Seriously Series goals are helping me to rectify this in a big way.

I started reading Desire Unchained right before Bout-of-Books 6.0. Silly me thought that I could start it and then put it down for a week while I read all the other books on my Goal list. Yep, silly me is right. Once I got into the Demonica world again I couldn't stop. It wasn't just Shade and Runa either, although believe me, they would have been enough. It was Wraith and Kynan and Gem and Arik and Reaver - all of them just sucked me in. Yeah, I think I'm really going to enjoy catching up with these characters and the mythology that surrounds them.

Desire Unchained gave readers more back story and threw in some really crazy surprises that shocked everyone. I loved it! It definitely kept things moving. I love roller coaster rides in books and this one definitely didn't disappoint. Then there was the romance. *swoon* Both Runa and Shade had their reasons for not wanting to fall for each other. BIG reasons. Shade was cursed and Runa was heart broken and seeking revenge. They fought themselves as much as they fought each other and even though their love was inevitable it seemed impossible. Not a new concept in a PNR but like I've said before, it's not necessarily where the characters end up, it's the journey that gets them there and this was quite a journey.

I love the interaction between the characters in both the Demonica series and the Lords of Deliverance series. The dialogue and the dynamics between these flows so well. It's easy to get wrapped up in the story and I love it when readers are treated to different POVs throughout a book. Basically, there's nothing about either one of these series that I don't like.

Even though this was Runa and Shade's book, I think one of my favorite characters is Wraith. That's good because the next book is his. He discovered as much about himself in Desire Unchained as readers did and I can't wait to see what Larissa Ione has in store for him in Passion Unleashed.
Wow! I loved this book. After finding the first one good but not great I didn't have high expectations for this one but since so many of my bookie friends love this series I was looking forward to reading it. So glad I did!

The Good Stuff Sometimes a book and it's characters speak to you. This book did that for me. I liked Shade and worried over him as if he were real. I appreciated Runa and the strong woman she was. I'm not sure if I'd have liked her as much if I "met" her prior to her becoming a warg because she sounded a bit like milquetoast but I'm so glad I got to know the person she became. Not only did Ione do an amazing job at fleshing out her MCs, her supporting characters were great too. I'm really looking forward to reading their books as well. As far as the plot goes, I was so engrossed in it I read far later into the night to make sure my H/h were going to be OK. Oh and Larissa does an amazing job of continuing her world building. I love the setting of the demon hospital!

The Bad Stuff While I didn't mind any of these things I think others might so I feel I should include them as more of a warning to other readers. Runa runs hot and cold and then hot again in regards to Shade. She hates him. She loves him. She wants to rip his clothes off of him. You get the picture. Shade has a "torture chamber" in his bedroom. That's right folks. Shade is way into BDSM. Not a deal breaker for many but some might have issues with the punishing of women who "need" it even if they leave his lair completely satisfied. Some people might find this bordering on abusive. Speaking of Shade, since he has no plans to ever fall in love he has a history of lovin' and leavin' and cheating isn't beneath him.

In a Nutshell Despite some obvious issues with the characters I still loved this book. I will definitely move on to book 3 in the series. Thanks to all my bookie friends who "forced" me to read this series.
