Point Apocalypse a nearfuture action thriller eBook Alex Bobl

I really should have looked at the screen-shots (unusual for a book and what caught me out) underneath the cover thumbnail image. Missing that meant that I read a book which I normally have simply passed by.

Point Apocalypse is far too militaristic and much too dependent upon technology for my tastes and I only mention that to encourage those who enjoy such material and to discourage those who don't. It's not a reason for marking a book down and I'm not going to.

What did particularly please me is that the dialogue managed not to be too stilted or jingoistic (given the genre) and that considerable care has been taken over the book's construction and editing. There was one howler where Cathy had her name spelt differently in the space of a few pages but that provided a bit of unintentional light relief.

On the minus side, strip the technology and the battle scenes away from Point Apocalypse and you don't get left with very much unfortunately. This is why I don't feel it merits that fifth star I give out for 'star quality' although I'd emphasise that it does both deliver and zip along.

If you're thinking of buying the book, look at the images underneath the cover image and be guided by those because, unlike most sci-fi pictures, they're actually very accurate. If that's your cup of tea, go for it and you won't be disappointed.

Point Apocalypse a nearfuture action thriller eBook Alex Bobl Reviews

This book starts off with the main protagonist on his way to a prison colony on a world known as Pangea.

There were some good parts to the story and then there is the bad. One thing that bugged me a bit was the author did repeat a certain descriptive action over and over in the first few chapters involving how the characters consumed food... Just read the book you will see. Still there were parts where the story elements just didn't really seemed to build up or mesh well, they just sorta happened, many times bluntly. I also thought one of the twists that occurred with the main character happened a tad too soon and suffered from odd timing and felt a little forced so the story could move along.

Still I find myself praising the author for this story had some really good action to it.

Shortcomings aside the book probability would suit those who like reading stories written mostly through the protagonist's point of view. His journey is after all, set forth in a sci-fi adventure on a potentiality deadly world where not only the environment a hazard to the characters, but technology as well.
This is a fun, action-packed, military/science adventure. Its premise is an interesting variation on the wormhole story line. It is a straightforward, first person account from a soldier's point of view. The hero carries the narrative through the nonstop action. If you want a basic, fast-moving scifi adventure, you may enjoy this. It is also interesting to see things from Bobl's Russian point of view.
A pretty good read. I loved the setting and the back story. I'll probably use something very like it in an upcoming role-playing game. I also appreciated how English was NOT the native and/or default language (I enjoy reading world literature and watching foreign films). The things I struggled with (loss of a star for each) were, first, the several personality overlays or memory blocks. One was reasonable. The second was too hard to swallow. The second item was the bit of Dux Ex Machina at the end. Even so, a decent read.
This book started off like those movies that you view through some dazed character’s eyes. Four chapters into the book I was about to give up on it and then it started to get interesting, but I found that there were several brief moments scattered throughout the long dry stretches where things just didn't seem to flow well. To be fair, the author is not a native English speaker; however, I believe this may account for many of the disconnected thoughts and somewhat rambling sections of the story. I gave this book three stars for the unique aspect, which was refreshing considering all the cookie-cutter Sci-Fi out there these days. With some editing help this could have been a very good read, but for me the lack of fluidity was just a bit too distracting.
Mark Posner is a prisoner. He will spend the rest of his on the inland prison of Pangea. But, as Mark soon discovers, he is also a pawn. His moves are being manipulated by those who would shatter the wormhole that connects this planet with Earth, and thereby destroy Earth.

Mark cannot let this happen. But nothing is as it seems. Mark isn’t Mark, or is he? Is he a hero, or a killer? Is he a soldier or someone/something else? He has no one to trust, yet to survive he must trust someone.

And so we have a great page-turner by Alex Bobl. The book begins with adventure, with very little breathing room between pages of action. The author keeps you guessing from the very first, and does not let up until the last page.

If you like futuristic high-tech thrillers, like I do, you’ll find this an excellent read, hard to put down, even harder to forget. After this first book, you might even find yourself a fan of Alex Bobl, and begin looking for other books he has written.
I'll call this one 3 1/2 Stars. It had some good world building and a plot I don't remember ever reading, and I liked the main characters and thought the bad guys were well done, too. The action scenes were mostly okay and I felt the science and alien creatures were really interesting, as was the similarities and differences to our earth animals. The thing that held it back from a straight 4-Star rating for me was the hero seemed to overcome things just a little too easily, and some of the action scenes were confusing to where I couldn't always figure out what was happening. Some specific problems I had

WARNING, SPOILER ALERT I'm not sure how anyone could keep going after all Mark's injuries, even with the special blood he had. And cobbling together a jet pack and being able to guide it seemed pretty far-fetched to me. I did like his connection to the alien planet, though. END SPOILERS

All in all, I did like the story and I do recommend it to other Sci-Fi fans.
