Almanac of the Dead Leslie Marmon Silko Books Reviews

This book was published a year before I arrived in the Southwest from NYC, pivoting from Tucson to Taos where I have remained for 24 years. Tucson in 1993 precipitated a cultural shock for me, that introduced the ancient native American legacy into my understanding of spiritual culture and how white culture was attempting to smother this power. This book colors in the line drawing of my imagination and brings hope and imagination to the struggle to redeem mankind from the dark spiral of ignorant materialism. It's fiction but the symbols are alive, even more so after 24 years.
prophetic.
This is the most difficult novel I have ever attempted to read. It is enormous with more characters than the reader can track. With the exception of one minor character, every character is despicable, corrupt, and morally degenerate. The native Americans fair no better than the white characters. Usually, Silko's novels have an "other worldly" tone with myths and dreams mixed into the drama, but "Almanac of the Dead" is missing this. Silko catalogs the corruption of each character in graphic concrete prose. There are no winners in this novel--only a multitude of losers. It is well written and Silko carefully defines each character, but the tone of the novel leaves the reader longing for a cleansing bath.
Incredible read!
I've had many people recommend this book, as I live in Tucson, but it took years for me to order it. I am glad I did. I recommend i to every single person considering it. you wont regret it.
Not nearly as complex as some would like to make it. The "land" interacts with people to manifest its spirits. Those who are "cut off" from the land, become alienated and "alien." 500 years is not so long in the grand scheme of things. What is yet to come is what has been before, a people who are shaped by the spirits of the Americas.
Her novel might not make some people "happy." It certainly isn't your romantic "Indian story" (that so many people seem to want). The lives it depicts in fiction aren't far from the convoluted inner workings of some of the indigenous movements here in the Americas (the Zapatista, AIM, etc.) nor from the "cultural elite" who rot in their penthouses in the monuments of Western civilization.
It might not be an "easy" read, but it is certainly an engaging one, and a well-crafted one. Highly recommended.
I loved the book in the beginning. It just went on. and on. and on. I finished it because I had invested soooo much time into it. I think she is a wonderful writer in desperate need of any editor who isn't afraid to trim.
