The title of this book, "Loss of Innocence" describes the story very well. It takes place primarily in Martha's Vineyard in 1968-69 when troops were being called up by lottery to go to Vietnam. During this period, also, Robert Kennedy was assassinated, thus clearning the way for Richard Nixon to win the presidential election, after which civil unrest in our own country became insane. The year 2011 was about terrorists from Islamic extremist factions; this prior period was citizens of our own country. I personally knew at least 43 young men who were killed in Vietnam; the ones who came home developed severe cases of PTSD and it was YEARS before our own fighting troops received any V.A. benefits, including medical, for the service they gave to our country. Because of napalm, 7 of my close friends died of cancer-related illnesses but without any help from our government for treatment and benefits for their families. This book tells the story of two families, one whose patriarch is a Nixon supporter, and the young man who saw through all the corruption and lies being told to our own people. Much of this is available through the Freedom of Information Act now, although I suspect the worst atrocities, if documented, never saw the light of day. This was an age when I graduated from high school and women were discouraged from having careers as such; if anything, perhaps they could earn a little extra spending money. I certainly would like to know how this government became corrupt so fast and the worst thing of all was the fact that the dreaded word Communism had absolutely NOTHING to do with these "conflicts." I was NEVER a housewife solely. I had a business (water well drilling), worked for the USPS, the State of California and also for two counties as an eligibility specialist in social services. I can honestly say that unless a female came from a very rich family, the stay-at-home mom was simply a pipe dream for most people, although I believe being an effective and stable parent is just about the most important job one can hold in our society. That goes for both genders. It is time to stop the madness of dividing societal chores up into "men's" work and "women's" work; with the women dominated occupations never paying as well as the men's. For example: and I will use only one at this point: sawmill workers. Young men who received diplomas and literally could not read were hired by high numbers at these mills until the wood supply began to run out. A tree takes longer than four years to grow to maturity after all. As a result of all this, I peronally believe our educational system was inferior to many, many others in the world. Slowly that is being changed, but why did no one have the vision to see what the future would and could bring? This book gave me a lot to think about, and God willing, 'conflicts' and 'wars' will one day be part of ancient history......Tags : Loss of Innocence [Richard North Patterson] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Loss of Innocence Richard North Patterson 9781623650926 Books Reviews
Just like reading an autobiographical novel, which Japanese writers good at. Patterson depicted well of emotional discordance of an adolescent girl of an affluent family together with a period flavor of the late sixties. In the process of finding Whitney's true way of life, she was torn apart by the reality of her family, friends and fiancé. Every conversations she made were seasoned with special atmosphere of the era. What came to the front through her telling of her youth was young Ben's life itself. Readers become speechless with admiration of Patterson's plot formulation.
Patterson had written covert references in his former work, "Fall from Grace." Like Ben started working as waiters at the parties of summer visitors, was after Claris' best friend Whitney, Claris' aborted friendship with Whitney, and collapse of Claris' farther's investment firm under claims of mismanagement. Many events written in this book were already told in the preceding book. Whitney looked back these events by following her own tracks. Why on earth did Ben marry Claris, and why did he stay. We are entangled in Ben's web in ways we can't imagine.
Patterson announces the title of the trilogy's last becomes "Eden in Winter." Would this be a sham marriage story, which replicated Ben's family of origin, spoken by Claris? Or the state of family depicted by Teddy. Teddy's landscape was said to capture winter, the bleak, pitiless gray of February, when short days and long nights led to drunkenness and domestic violence, families turning on one another, in the former book? Or Jenny's novel with tangible, distinctive shape and design, to tell Adam how it had been after he had gone? Waiting impatiently the third book of the trilogy.
Patterson generally writes in the suspense/thriller genre, and this book was billed as such, so that's the type of narrative I expected. This book more accurately falls into the 20th Century History category, and while I don't mind acquiring more information on the century in which I was born, I don't think the narrative delivered the information in the most graceful manner possible. The political "discussions" came off more as the type of lecture I'd expect in a college class room, consequently seeming a bit pedantic in tone. Also, (and any male author should give this serious consideration before writing from a woman's point-of-view), men need to be extremely careful when they presume to present the woman's viewpoint in matters such as Reproductive Rights. They can do all the research in the world, but there are some issues that are solely the province of the female experience. Simply reiterating generic comments attributed to women doesn't cut it in this situation. It's not just men who do this. I think women often attempt to write from the male viewpoint and miss the mark as well. However, some of the specific issues addressed in this novel are strictly female.
I do recall this bleak period in history -- although I was just a child -- and can recall as well the somber atmosphere it created amongst the adults in my life. It was a pain so excruciatingly felt, that I think even children experienced it to a degree.
Although this novel addresses issues of classism and race, I do think that perhaps Patterson implicitly reinforced the notion that one's station in life will determine one's character and therefore one's breeding will ultimately be illustrated by one's choices. I don't have to agree with everything an author puts forth, but this is an unpleasant feeling with which to finish a book -- especially one that addresses the great social questions of the time.
